Athens State Orchestra Calls Off Concert Featuring Controversial Russian Pianist Denis Matsuev

The Athens State Orchestra has announced the cancellation of a scheduled concert featuring Russian pianist Denis Matsuev, as stated in a press release on Monday.

“The Orchestra has always prioritized artistic excellence and upheld the values of open dialogue and mutual respect that characterize the European cultural landscape,” the statement read. “In light of the recent international circumstances, it has opted to modify its programming accordingly.”

Another pianist will take Matsuev’s place for the concert on November 21, with further details to be shared soon.

Matsuev, a well-known pianist who has openly endorsed President Vladimir Putin and the Kremlin’s policies, particularly concerning Ukraine, has not performed in the West since Russia commenced its large-scale invasion in 2022.

He was honored with the Order of Honor by Putin in 2018 for his contributions to Russian culture and the arts.

This isn’t the first occasion on which a Russian artist supportive of Moscow’s stance has faced concert cancellations in Europe. In July, a performance by conductor Valery Gergiev at Italy’s Royal Palace of Caserta was also called off due to public backlash and fears that his participation could be utilized as Kremlin propaganda.
