Russian Prosecutors Office Confirms Aeroflot IT Outage Caused by Cyberattack

The disruptions in Aeroflot’s information systems were caused by a hacker attack, as reported by the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office. The agency has initiated a criminal investigation under part 4 of Article 272 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, which addresses unauthorized access to computer information.

«Following the instructions of the Prosecutor General’s Office of Russia, supervisory measures have been organized in relation to the delays and cancellations of flights at Sheremetyevo Airport. The cause was a malfunction in Aeroflot’s information system due to a hacker attack… A criminal case has been opened based on the findings of the prosecutor’s investigation,» stated the Prosecutor General’s Office.

On July 28, 2025, Aeroflot announced that there had been a failure in the airline’s information systems, which could lead to adjustments in flight schedules, including rescheduling and cancellations. According to media reports, hackers claimed responsibility for the breach of Aeroflot’s systems. They asserted that they conducted a «prolonged and large-scale operation,» resulting in a «complete compromise and destruction of Aeroflot’s internal IT infrastructure.» A source from one of the transportation-related IT organizations indicated that an attack had occurred.

The airline’s operations are completely paralyzed, according to the Telegram channel «Aviatorshina,» citing sources within the company. «According to the airline’s staff, the entire internal IT system of Aeroflot was hacked last night. Computers are not functioning anywhere—neither in Sheremetyevo nor in the airline’s offices. All systems have gone down, there are no flight plans, and they cannot even refuel airplanes,» one source reported. Another mentioned that only those flights for which calculations were completed are departing. In Melkisarovo (Aeroflot’s headquarters), even the electricity went out—presumably cut off to prevent anyone from turning on computers and accessing the system. Many crew members are being sent home, while office employees are left without tasks,» sources from Aviatorshina clarified.

An official statement from Aeroflot at 1:30 PM Moscow time reads:

«Aeroflot informs that due to a failure in its IT infrastructure, the airline is making necessary adjustments to its flight schedule, which includes partial flight cancellations. Passengers can check the current status of their flights on the online displays of the airline and departing airports. Updated information regarding the situation is also being published in the main section of Aeroflot’s website and on its official Telegram channels and social media.

Passengers affected by canceled flights will have options for refunds or ticket reissuance once the airline’s services resume their normal operations.

Currently, a team of specialists is working to restore the airline’s services as quickly as possible.
