Ovechkin Urges Reinstatement of Russian Athletes in Global Sports Amidst Historic Record Celebration

Alexander Ovechkin, the all-time leading goal scorer in NHL history, expressed his hope for Russian athletes to be reinstated in top global sporting events during a visit to Moscow, where he was warmly welcomed by hundreds of enthusiastic fans on Saturday.

The Washington Capitals star received an enthusiastic reception during his first homecoming since he scored his 895th goal last April, surpassing the legendary Wayne Gretzky’s long-standing record.

«I hope that soon we will get the chance to compete again, allowing our athletes to participate in the Olympics and world championships to represent our nation,» the hockey icon shared with AFP.

Amid a sea of reporters and excited supporters, Ovechkin walked along a prestigious Moscow street adorned with «Ovechkin 8» jerseys and banners proclaiming «eternal record.»

Over the past three years, Russians have had few opportunities to celebrate success in international sports, as many have been barred from competing due to the Kremlin’s involvement in the war in Ukraine.

Ovechkin’s recent achievement provided a rare moment of joy for his countrymen.

Dozens of fans gathered at an outdoor ice rink, which is converted into a football field during the warmer months, to seek autographs from the star.

«Ovi, Ovi,» the crowd chanted, calling out Ovechkin’s popular American nickname.

This rink, located in a typical Moscow neighborhood, is where the 39-year-old left winger began his remarkable career. The venue stands out amid the surrounding grey apartment blocks, recently renovated with a giant sign proclaiming «eternal record 895» prominently displayed on its surface.

Antonina Mikhailova, an IT manager sporting Ovechkin’s jersey, remarked to AFP, «No matter the global circumstances, sports transcend borders.»

Fyodor Troshin, an amateur hockey player waiting for Ovechkin, excitedly stated, «That would be incredible; we must make it happen!» in reference to the idea of Russian athletes returning to international competitions. «Individuals like Alexander Ovechkin are bridging Russian sports with international leagues,» the 40-year-old added.

Despite his success on the ice, Ovechkin’s political affiliations and connections to Russia have generated some controversy. He has been an outspoken supporter of Vladimir Putin’s long tenure, even after the invasion of Ukraine.

Practicing political caution, Ovechkin has refrained from denouncing Moscow’s actions in Ukraine, while also avoiding outright endorsement—fully aware that such a stance would be favored by Putin.

«I felt a sense of pride in what we’ve accomplished, breaking the record,» Ovechkin, who is famously missing a front tooth, told AFP regarding surpassing Gretzky’s 26-year milestone.
