Google Launches Veo 3 Video Creation Model on Gemini API with Steep Pricing

The Veo 3 video creation model from Google is now accessible via the Gemini API. It sits among the higher-priced options within the AI video creation tools market.

The Gemini API integration is designed for developers looking to add advanced video creation capabilities to their applications or build ready-to-use prototypes. Currently, the API only supports text-to-video conversion, but image-to-video conversion is already available within the Gemini app. Veo 3 is Google’s first model capable of generating high-resolution videos with synchronized audio based on a single text prompt.

To facilitate developers, Google AI Studio offers an SDK template and a starter application to quickly create prototypes. To access these resources, an active Google Cloud project with billing enabled is necessary.

To utilize Veo 3 through the Gemini API, a paid subscription with Google Cloud is required. The pricing is set at $0.75 per second for 720p video at 24 frames per second, with audio in a 16:9 format. This is 25 cents more than the cost of using Veo 2 without sound. Google has also introduced the Veo 3 Fast mode, which operates faster and at a lower cost, but is currently not available through the API.

At the existing rates, an eight-second video costs $6, while a five-minute video amounts to $225. Since achieving optimal results often necessitates multiple attempts, expenses can escalate quickly. For instance, if ten times more footage is needed to produce five minutes of usable video, the overall expense could reach $2,250. Nonetheless, Google likely contemplates that in certain situations, this might be more cost-effective than traditional video production.

As of now, Google does not have substantial integrations to showcase. It’s also possible that some companies are employing Veo 3 in the background without disclosing it publicly.
