Sound Evolution: Discovering the Upgrades in Nothing Ear 2’s Mid-Range Wireless Experience

For the very first time in its relatively brief history as a tech firm, Nothing has introduced a second-generation product. The Nothing Ear 2 true wireless earbuds serve as the successor to the company’s inaugural offering, and they bear a striking similarity to the Nothing Ear 1 in both design and feel. With a price tag of Rs. 9,999 in India, the Nothing Ear 2 boasts significant enhancements in specifications and aims to deliver an improved overall experience concerning features and audio performance.

If you are currently using the Nothing Ear 1 (Review) and considering an upgrade, or even if you are simply in the market for a mid-range true wireless headset, the Nothing Ear 2 may have piqued your interest. There are notable updates in the new true wireless earphones that set it apart from its visually similar predecessor. Here’s what’s new with the Nothing Ear 2.

The Nothing Ear 2 closely resembles the design of the Nothing Ear 1

The Nothing Ear 2 is more compact

While the Nothing Ear 2 maintains a similar appearance to its forerunner, the charging case has been significantly reduced in both size and weight. This, however, results in a lower battery capacity of 485mAh, compared to the 570mAh of the Ear 1’s case. Nonetheless, Nothing asserts that optimizations made to the earbuds are expected to deliver comparable battery performance in this new model.

The earpieces of the Ear 2 are nearly identical in size to those of the Nothing Ear 1, but they introduce a major shift in the control mechanism. The Nothing Ear 2 features force-touch controls located on the stem, which can be personalized via the app. The squeeze actions are confirmed with a soft click sound, indicating that the gesture has been recognized by the earbuds. The earpieces come with an IP54 rating for dust and water resistance, and the case offers enhanced protection with an IP55 rating.

Expanded customization options via the Nothing X app

Nothing Phone 1 (Review), the app settings are integrated into the Bluetooth settings of the smartphone, allowing you to adjust and control everything from that interface directly.

Key new attributes include personalized and adaptive active noise cancellation, a low-latency mode, and the option to create a custom sound profile. The ANC feature now comprises three levels of intensity, alongside an adaptive mode that adjusts the noise cancellation based on environmental conditions.

Support for LHDC 5 Bluetooth codec and connectivity with dual devices

The Nothing Ear 2 comes with significant modifications in its specifications, most notably featuring Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity with compatibility for SBC, AAC, and LHDC 5 Bluetooth codecs. Additionally, it supports dual-device connectivity, allowing you to connect the Nothing Ear 2 to two source devices at once.

Currently, I have only had the chance to test the LHDC codec with the Nothing Phone 1. Comprehensive testing on the Nothing Ear 2 is in progress, so stay tuned for our detailed review of the new true wireless earbuds.
