Nintendo to End Sale of Switch Vouchers on January 30, 2026

Japanese Nintendo has announced that it will cease the production and sale of vouchers for the original Switch starting from January 30 of the next year. These vouchers enable subscribers of Nintendo Switch Online to purchase more digital games at a reduced price.

The vouchers will expire one year after their purchase, even if that date occurs after January 30, 2026.

Nintendo first introduced game vouchers in 2019, allowing customers to buy a pair for $100 and exchange them for two eligible games. Titles like Super Mario Party Jamboree, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, and Mario & Luigi Brothership, which retail at $60 each, can be obtained using these vouchers, allowing players to save $10 on every game.

These vouchers cannot be used for acquiring exclusives for the recently launched Switch 2, released early last month. However, users can bypass this restriction by purchasing discounted Switch games with the vouchers, then paying for their upgrade to Switch 2.

It is unclear whether Nintendo plans to introduce another savings mechanism, which is particularly relevant now that games for Switch 2 can cost up to $80. Earlier this year, the company stopped awarding Gold Points under the My Nintendo Gold Points program for purchases made on the original Switch, leading gamers to lose the ability to earn points and redeem them for discounts on digital content.

In response to criticism regarding the high price of the Switch 2, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa suggested that children engage with the company’s characters through cartoons, theme parks, and other merchandise. He explained that the increased console price is justified by the enhanced gaming experience and new features introduced.
