Redmi Note 12 5G: A Premium Upgrade Leaving Budget Phones Behind

Redmi Note 12 5G has officially debuted in India. This is the first time the basic Note series model is equipped with support for 5G connections in the country. However, similar to many budget-friendly 5G smartphones, the Redmi Note 12 5G carries a «5G tax,» resulting in a higher price compared to its predecessors. Xiaomi has introduced the Redmi Note 12 5G with an entry price of Rs. 17,999 in India. For reference, the Redmi Note 11, which launched last year in India, had a starting price of Rs. 13,499. Although the price tag has seen an increase, Xiaomi assures that no corners were cut regarding specifications, and the Redmi Note 12 5G features some impressive hardware.

When it comes to design, the Redmi Note 12 5G in its Frosted Green variant is visually appealing. As the name implies, the plastic back has a frosted texture, providing a glass-like luster. The device is also offered in Mystique Blue and the standard Matte Black.

The rear side smoothly transitions into the flat plastic frame, creating a comfortable grip. The Redmi Note 12 5G has a weight of approximately 188g and measures 7.98mm thick. It possesses an IP53 rating, indicating basic resistance to water splashes and dust.

The display has undergone several enhancements compared to the 6.5-inch 90Hz AMOLED screen found in the Redmi Note 11. The Redmi Note 12 5G boasts a larger 6.67-inch full-HD+ AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. The device intelligently adjusts between 60Hz and 120Hz depending on the content displayed. The flat display is framed by relatively slim bezels, although the chin is thicker. A small cutout at the top houses the 13-megapixel front-facing camera.

With a peak brightness of up to 1200 nits, the screen is highly visible even in bright outdoor settings. It would have been advantageous if Xiaomi had included stereo speakers in the Redmi Note 12 5G, as this feature would have enhanced the multimedia experience, especially given the exceptional display quality. The Redmi Note 11 did offer stereo sound, making this a downgrade for the Redmi Note 12 5G.

On the rear, the Redmi Note 12 5G features a triple-camera array consisting of a 48-megapixel primary sensor, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens, and a 2-megapixel macro lens. From my brief usage thus far, the performance of the main camera appears satisfactory for its price range. While the dynamic range could use some improvement, the colors captured are accurate. A comprehensive performance evaluation of all camera setups will follow in our detailed review.

Notable aspects of this latest budget Redmi Note include its 5G support and a new chipset. The device is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 processor, which we previously encountered in the iQoo Z6 Lite 5G (Review). While that device exhibited good performance, we will assess how the Redmi Note 12 5G has been optimized for performance.

MIUI 13 based on Android 12 on the Redmi Note 12 5G

Xiaomi has introduced the Redmi Note 12 5G with MIUI 13 based on Android 12, which may be disappointing for some users. The manufacturer has committed to rolling out two significant Android updates, meaning users can expect Android 13 and Android 14. Additionally, Xiaomi has ensured four years of security updates for this model. Although MIUI 13 contains some pre-installed apps that may be deemed unnecessary, they can be removed at the user’s discretion.

The phone comes equipped with a 5000mAh battery that supports 33W fast charging. For those curious, a charger is included in the packaging.

Beginning at a price of Rs. 17,999, the Redmi Note 12 5G offers a configuration with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. The version we have includes 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, retailing for Rs. 19,999. This latest entry-level Redmi Note model is priced higher than many fans of the series might have anticipated. Should you consider making a purchase? Details will be covered in our upcoming full review, soon to be published on Gadgets 360.
