Nintendo Switch 2 Outperforms PS4, Rivals Xbox Series S for Power in Exciting Launch

Last week marked the debut of the Nintendo Switch 2, which has already exceeded sales of 3.5 million units. This updated hybrid console features an enhanced display, new social functionalities, redesigned Joy-Con controllers, and increased processing power, among several enhancements compared to the original Switch. Developer Koei Tecmo has indicated that the Switch 2 is more akin to the Xbox Series S, a console from the current generation, in terms of its computational capabilities, rather than the PS4.

Switch 2’s Performance Similar to Xbox Series S

In a discussion with wccftech, Takuto Edagawa, producer of Koei Tecmo’s forthcoming RPG Wild Heart S, shared insights about the upcoming port for Switch 2, which is slated for release next month. He also spoke about the development of games for the new console and its performance capabilities.

“Raw computing power has many aspects, making it complex to generalize, but I believe it’s closer to the Series S,” he commented when addressing the Switch 2’s computational capacity relative to the Xbox Series S and PS4.

Although the Series S is positioned as the entry-level model among current-gen Xbox systems, it surpasses the PS4, which belongs to the previous generation. While Nintendo has not provided specific details on the graphics capabilities of the Switch 2, the console successfully runs graphically intensive AAA titles like Cyberpunk 2077 and Hogwarts Legacy right from its launch without noticeable issues.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is equipped with a custom Nvidia processor that includes an Nvidia GPU with dedicated RT Cores and Tensor Cores. It is compatible with Nvidia DLSS upscaling technology and supports ray tracing in games. Following the console’s reveal in April, Nvidia stated that its custom GPU would deliver “next-level visuals” and “smoother gameplay” on Nintendo’s latest platform. The company also asserted that the Switch 2 would offer graphics performance ten times that of the original Nintendo Switch.

Koei Tecmo plans to launch Wild Hearts S, a port of its 2023 RPG Wild Hearts for the Switch 2, on July 25. The game is currently available for pre-order on the Nintendo Store.
