Teslas Model Y Completes Autonomous Delivery to Customer Amid Mixed Reviews

Tesla has announced its first autonomous delivery of a Model Y vehicle from the Gigafactory in Austin, Texas, to a customer located approximately 30 minutes away. The car drove itself, and the entire journey was recorded on video and shared on X.

The footage shows that the car can navigate parking lots with ease and drive independently on the streets. The Model Y merges onto highways effortlessly and reaches its destination without any human intervention.

There was no driver present, and according to Elon Musk, no remote operator was controlling the vehicle. The robotaxi technology utilized in the Model Y is the same that Tesla is implementing for public autonomous rides.

The trip appeared to go smoothly, with the Tesla team following the vehicle to capture video. Other team members were on hand near the customer’s location to greet the arrival of the Model Y.

However, the pilot program for Tesla’s robotaxi service in Austin started off on a somewhat rocky note.

Videos released from the initial test drives showcased several issues: the vehicles occasionally failed to stop for school buses and stop signs, and they struggled with unexpected situations, such as parked cars with hazard lights flashing.

In one of the videos, the Tesla briefly swerved into the oncoming lane before correcting itself mid-turn. These incidents caught the attention of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which has since requested additional information from Tesla regarding these issues.
