Microsoft Edge Follows Chrome in Disabling uBlock Origin and Other Extensions

The Microsoft Edge browser has begun to alert users about the deactivation of several extensions, including the widely used ad blocker uBlock Origin. Users are advised to disable it due to the discontinuation of support.

In mid-February 2025, Google removed uBlock Origin from the Chrome Web Store for some users. For certain installations, a warning appeared stating: «This extension may soon be unsupported as it does not comply with best practices for Chrome extensions.»

These changes are linked to the introduction of the Manifest V3 extension platform, which promises enhanced security and improved privacy compared to Manifest V2. However, certain features essential for uBlock Origin’s functionality are not supported in Manifest V3. This includes the WebRequest API, which is crucial for blocking ads and other content, and in Manifest V3, it operates under restrictions.

It seems that uBlock Origin will soon cease to function in Microsoft Edge. As alternatives, users might consider uBlock Origin Lite (from the same developers), the AdGuard blocker, or any other extension that supports Manifest V3.

Additionally, there are browsers that will continue to support uBlock Origin, such as Firefox. Mozilla has previously stated that it will maintain support for the WebRequest API, allowing extensions like uBlock Origin to operate effectively.
