Google Unveils AI Agent to Transform Coding with Natural Language Interaction

Google has unveiled an AI agent designed to assist with programming tasks. It comprehends prompts in natural language while interacting with the terminal.

Gemini CLI aims to reduce the complexity of traditional programming interfaces, enabling developers to communicate with AI using everyday language.

“With Gemini CLI, you will be able to interact with your computer in a natural way, troubleshoot issues, streamline complicated workflows, and accomplish much more than before,” stated Taylor Mullen, a senior software engineer at Google.

This AI agent grants access to the Gemini AI software through a terminal—a text-based interface where developers input commands to operate their computers. While primarily designed to aid in coding, the tool can also be utilized for various tasks such as generating videos or setting up simple websites.

Gemini CLI is open-source, allowing users to explore the model and verify its safety. Access to the service is available through any personal Google account with the free Gemini Code Assist license.

By default, it offers 60 queries per minute and 1,000 per day. With a basic paid subscription, these limits increase to 120 queries per minute and 1,500 per day.

It’s worth noting that in April 2024, Google introduced the AI model for programmers, known as Gemini Code Assist.
