Inside the Oppo Find X7 Ultra: The Camera-Heavy Flagship that Wont Make it to India

Since the Find X2 made its debut in India back in 2020, Oppo has yet to introduce a flagship X-series smartphone focused on photography. Although the manufacturer has been consistent with rolling out its X-series flagships in China annually, the latest offering in the high-end category in India has been its N series foldable models. The latest addition was the Find N3 Flip, which was unveiled in late 2023. Unexpectedly, Oppo has asked us to experience their newest flagship. This model, named the Find X7 Ultra, boasts impressive hardware specifications and features a quad-camera setup at the rear, including two periscopic telephoto lenses—a first for high-end smartphones. After testing the phone for several days, I am left wondering why it won’t be available in India.

Indeed, the Oppo Find X7 Ultra will not be launched in India. Currently, it is exclusive to China and retails starting at CNY 5,999 (approximately Rs. 70,000) for the base model which offers 12GB of RAM and 256GB storage, the version I have for review. The phone can be configured up to 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, priced at CNY 6,999 (around Rs. 80,000).

Visually, the Oppo Find X7 Ultra certainly makes a statement. It is offered in three distinct colors: Ocean Blue, Sepia Brown, and Tailored Black, each showcasing a unique appearance thanks to the contrasting colors and finishes developed by Oppo’s design department. My personal favorite is the Sepia Brown variant, which distinguishes itself from anything else available in the market, exuding a luxurious vibe with its tan-brown faux leather and matte silver accents. The Ocean Blue option features a deep navy leather complemented by a sharply white section surrounding the camera, evoking a maritime vibe.

I’ve received the Tailored Black variant to review, which presents a subtle yet high-end look. The vegan leather rear (starting beneath the camera housing) is accented with a stitch that runs along the bottom and straight down the center, creating a gap around the Oppo logo.

The 6.82-inch QHD+ AMOLED display is adorned with curved glass similar to the gently rounded edges at the back and frame. Additionally, the display’s top and bottom edges are rounded, enhancing the overall user experience during software interactions.

As the device is not officially available in India, I have a Chinese unit running the localized version of Oppo’s ColorOS software. It comes preloaded with many third-party applications and does not include any Google apps, not even the Play Store. Therefore, my first step was to install the Play Store from a legitimate source before downloading widely used applications.

This software experience is driven by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, Qualcomm’s top-of-the-line chipset. Apart from the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, the Gen 3 has only appeared on devices like the iQoo 12, OnePlus 12, Xiaomi 14, and the Xiaomi 14 Ultra in India.

In keeping with the tradition of the Find X series, the Find X7 Ultra places great emphasis on camera quality. This time, Oppo has revamped the camera configuration. The new model features a 50-megapixel primary camera equipped with a Sony LYT-900 1-inch sensor, a 3X optical zoom periscope telephoto lens housing a 50-megapixel Sony IMX890 sensor, and a second 6X optical zoom periscope telephoto camera with a 50-megapixel IMX858 sensor. Additionally, there is a 50-megapixel LYT-600 sensor for ultra-wide photography. The front-facing camera has also been upgraded to a 32-megapixel LYT-506 sensor. This camera setup appears highly capable of handling various photographic challenges, with Oppo claiming it can shoot 4K 60fps video across all lenses. I’m eager to put these cameras through their paces in our full review.

On the battery front, Oppo continues to feature a 5,000mAh capacity, typical among this year’s camera-centric flagship models. Included in the packaging is a compact 100W charger, and the phone also supports 50W wireless charging.

Given these specifications, it is evident that Oppo has packed everything necessary into the Ultra smartphone to vie with competitors like the Xiaomi 14 Ultra and the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. By providing us with a Find X7 Ultra unit for review, Oppo seems to showcase its capabilities, presenting a compelling phone with a distinctive design that could offer tough competition to Samsung’s Galaxy Ultra line.

Regrettably, this phone will not be available for purchase in India, as Oppo has explicitly stated that there are no plans to introduce this model in the country. Nevertheless, we will be thoroughly evaluating this device in the next few days to provide our audience with insights on how it compares against its rivals, so stay tuned for our complete review coming soon.
