Austria is not going to pay for Russian gas in rubles, Austrian Minister for European and Foreign Affairs Alexander Schallenberg said on May 5 on the air of the TV channel Al Jazeera.

“Our position is clear. We are committed to existing agreements and will not pay in rubles, we have no such intention, ”Schellenberg commented on the situation.

The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, said on May 5 that the European Union has no plans to phase out Russian gas. However, the new package of restrictions will completely block oil supplies from Russia. Borrell justified this decision by the global nature of the oil market and the existence of other suppliers, unlike natural gas, which cannot be replaced by other energy resources.

This decision was made against the backdrop of anti-Russian sanctions that foreign countries imposed after the start of the Russian special operation to protect Donbass.

Western countries began to impose new sanctions in response to Russia’s special operation for the protection Donbass, the beginning of which was announced on February 24. AT Moscow explained that the tasks of the special operation include the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine, the implementation of which is necessary to ensure the security of Russia.
