Tokayev renamed the city of Kapchagay in honor of the leader of Soviet Kazakhstan Kunaev | Latest News

President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed a decree on renaming the city of Kapchagai to Konaev – in honor of the first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Kazakh SSR Dinmukhamed Kunaev.

“I decide to rename the city of Kapshagay, Almaty region, into the city of Konaev. This Decree comes into force from the day of its first official publication,” the Akorda website says.

EADaily reminds that the President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev announced the renaming for the first time in March 2022, delivering a keynote speech at a joint meeting of the chambers of the parliament of the republic. A separate block of the president’s speech was devoted to the territorial reform, which, according to Kazakh high-ranking officials, was unexpected even for them.

On behalf of Tokayev, three new regions are being created in the country: Abay region with a regional center in Semey, Ulytau region with a center in Zhezkazgan, and Zhetysu region with a center in Taldykorgan. At the same time, the Almaty region receives a new capital in Kapshagai, which is proposed to be renamed in honor of Dinmukhamed Kunaev. Commenting on the initiative, the deputy of the Mazhilis Andrey Linnik told the TG channel KeyNews that giving Kapshagay the name of “our great and respected Dinmukhamed Kunaev” is “a real gift for the whole nation.”
