Бутан переходит на Ethereum для улучшения безопасности национальной цифровой идентификации Translation: Bhutan transitions to Ethereum to enhance the security of its national digital identification system.

The Kingdom of Bhutan is set to migrate its National Digital Identification (NDI) system from Polygon to Ethereum. Authorities have cited the desire to enhance data security as the reason for this transition, as reported by BBS.

The transition will commence with the integration of NDI on Ethereum, and the complete migration of the platform is anticipated by the first quarter of 2026. The project was initially launched on Polygon in August 2024.

«By moving to Ethereum, we are further strengthening the security of our digital identification,» stated Jigme Tenzing, Secretary of the GovTech agency.

NDI employs self-sovereign identity technology, enabling nearly 800,000 residents of Bhutan to store and share digital credentials for access to online services.

The launch ceremony was attended by Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin and President of the Ethereum Foundation Aya Miyaguchi. She referred to Bhutan as the first country to «anchor its national digital identification system on Ethereum.»

Miyaguchi added that this decision paves the way for «a more open and secure digital future.»

According to BitcoinTreasuries, Bhutan ranks sixth globally in terms of Bitcoin reserves, holding 6,371 BTC.

It is worth noting that in July, the government transferred 512 BTC to Binance.
